ICD

Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD)

The Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) is a small, life-saving device placed inside the chest that continuously monitors the heartโ€™s rhythm and delivers an electrical shock when dangerous arrhythmias occur, preventing sudden cardiac death. It plays a crucial role in the management of patients at high risk for life-threatening rhythm disturbances.

When is ICD Recommended?

ICD therapy is recommended for patients with poor left ventricular (LV) function, particularly those who have a history of heart attack, ventricular arrhythmias, or have survived sudden cardiac arrest. It is also beneficial for patients with cardiomyopathies that predispose them to dangerous heart rhythms.

Clinical Evidence Supporting ICD

Major clinical trials such as the MIRACLE ICD trial and the SCD-HEFT trial have proven the effectiveness of ICDs in significantly reducing mortality among high-risk patients. These studies have established ICD implantation as a cornerstone therapy in modern heart failure and arrhythmia management.

With continuous technological advancements, ICDs are now smaller, more efficient, and often combined with pacing features, offering comprehensive rhythm management and greatly improving patient survival and quality of life.
